Based on a modern day observational investigation of the effect of tropical cyclones on ocean heat transport, we pursue the
conjecture of Emanuel, 2002, that tropical cyclones played an important role in maintaining the most intriguing aspects of
Paleogene climate, i.e. the relative stability of tropical climate in the face of substantial high latitude warming. We
speculate on what proxy records could be used to test this hypothesis and make concrete predictions of what the pattern of
tropical cyclone activity might have been in warm intervals such as the Eocene.
