AB: Recent data suggest that during the early to middle Pliocene the tropical oceans were characterized by the absence of equatorial and subtropical upwelling regions. In this state of affairs the tropical SST was essentially independent of longitude implying different tropical atmosphere and ocean circulations for the present-day. We report on perturbation experiments that simulate that tropical state using a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model.
