AB: Computer improvements now enable individual seismologists to store and process large fractions of the complete archive of global and regional seismograms. Practical analysis of these datasets requires development of automatic processing methods similar to those long used in reflection seismology. Robust results can often be obtained directly from the seismograms without using formal inversion techniques. In this lecture I will show several examples of how waveform stacking, cross-correlation, and other methods can yield images that are both aesthetically pleasing and informative. These results have applications in resolving upper-mantle discontinuity structure, constraining scattering from random heterogeneities, detecting and locating earthquakes, and direct imaging of fault rupture.
