In this study, we investigate the spatial variation of the ground motion in the Sherman Oaks region during the 1994
Northridge earthquake, through several broadband ground motion simulations obtained with a hybrid methodology. The
methodology involves a deterministic 3D finite element method for computing the low frequency motions and a stochastic
methodology by Kamae et al. (1996) for the higher frequencies. As a major modification to existing ground motion simulation
methods, in a small urban region that experienced widespread damage during a strong earthquake, we focus on determining a
more realistic site response. Employing a frequency-dependent radiation pattern and site dependent amplification factors, we
improve the spatial and temporal resolution of currently available simulated ground motions. Several box-shaped grid
structures are formed in the Sherman Oaks region, within which the spatial variation of the ground motion near the surface is
examined. The simulated results are presented in terms of synthetic seismograms and response spectra and are compared with
observations.
