AB: An onshore/offshore seismic array consisting of 15 three-component seismic digital stations was deployed in the area of Rhodos, southeastern Hellenic arc in Fall 2003. The geometry and location of the network was designed to observe the offshore activity and correlate active faults onshore with those offshore. Within a period of 70 days, more than 350 seismic events ranging from 0.7 to 4.5 ML were located by using six stations as a minimum to define the foci parameters. Magnitudes were defined by the coda length of the seismograms, calibrated by using earthquakes recorded also by the National Observatory of Athens. Within the network area travel time residuals after location were less than 0.2 sec, corresponding to an epicentral accuracy of the order of ñ2 Km, whereas the hypocentral depths were affected by an error of ñ5 km. Most of the recorded seismicity onshore originates from the northern part of the island of Rhodos, correlating with NE-SW striking faults that are seismically active, whereas the southern part of the island is almost aseismic. In the offshore the distribution of epicentres is aligned along NE-SW striking faults following the bathymetrical features. Also the fault system to the east of Rhodos of NE-SW trend that displaces the topographic features to depths more than 3000m is seismically active. The onshore/offshore local network identified several regions of high seismic activity not detectable by regional networks, demonstrating the advantage of deploying local seismic arrays for mapping seismicity and active deformation over short periods of time.
