AB: The EarthScope/USArray Transportable Seismic Array is a 400 element grid of broadband telemetered seismic stations spaced at 70km that is starting deployment in the western US as part of the NSF funded EarthScope MRE Facility. We describe the progress of the deployment in just over two years of activity, details of the station design and how the station performance relates to the goals of USArray, one of which is to form a high resolution three dimensional tomographic image of seismic velocity beneath the entire North American continent. We share experience with the communication systems used to support near real-time data telemetry, our strategies for permitting and methods for continuous deployment of high quality stations. By the end of 2005 USArray will have complete coverage throughout California and along the Pacific Coast of Washington and Oregon. The array currently consists of about 130 stations and grows at a rate of 10 per month. The final footprint of the initial 400 station array is planned for completion in 2007 and will span from the Canadian to Mexican border and eastward to the Tetons.
