AB: Along the Nankai Trough_Cmega-thrust earthquakes (over M8.0) have occurred with 100-150years intervals. The last mega-thrust earthquakes occurred in 1944 and 1946 as the Tonankai and Nankai earthquakes. Many researches focusing on the mega-thrust earthquakes around the Nankai Trough have been done. Especially, the seismic surveys by refractions and reflections have succeeded to image the key structures to understand recurrences of mega-thrust earthquakes around the Nankai Trough. Furthermore, simulation and modeling researches have progressed outstandingly in the last several years by the computer technology development such as the Earth Simulator. However, the ocean floor observatory systems have not been networked densely around the Nankai Trough. In the 1944 Tonankai and the 1946 Nankai earthquakes, each hypocenter was located off the Kii peninsula. So, our structural research group conducted seismic survey focusing on off Kii peninsula and imaged irregular structures at the segment boundary between the Tonankai and Nankai earthquake rupture zone. By the advanced simulation study of recurrences of mega-thrust earthquakes around the Nankai Trough, these irregular structures seem to act as a controller of recurrence cycle and pattern of mega-thrust earthquakes in the Nankaki Trough. Therefore, we propose the dense ocean floor observatory array system equipped with multi-kinds of sensors such as seismometers, pressure gauges, tilt meters and micro gravimeters etc., focusing on "the off Kii peninsula". The proposed dense observatory array system has two useful functions as follows, 1) Speedy evaluation and notification for earthquakes and tsunamis 2) Provide observed data such as ocean floor deformation derived from pressure gauges to improve the simulation and modeling researches about the mega-thrust earthquakes In this paper, we will explain the proposed observatory system in detail and emphasize the purpose and usefulness of this system.
