In this study we present a Finite Element formulation for Rupture Dynamics which allows us to incorporate separation
automatically. We analyze the convergence for linear and quadratic elements and compare our results for the exercises
proposed by the SCEC Spontaneous Rupture Group against other methods. A parametric study of the material heterogeneity
influence is performed and the implications of separation in the rupture process are briefly discussed.
