AB: Rich lidar datasets have been collected by the University of Illinois Fe Boltzmann temperature lidar at the British Rothera Station in Antarctica (67.5‡S, 68.0‡W) for 2.5 years from December 2002 to March 2005. A systematic data analysis on the polar mesospheric clouds (PMC) will be presented in this paper to characterize the PMC morphology, seasonal, and inter-annual variations at this southern location. Rothera results will be compared to our previous lidar measurements at the South Pole from December 1999 to October 2001. These lidar data will also be compared to SNOE satellite data on the PMC morphology, the hemispheric difference, and the latitudinal dependence of PMC height and brightness. Both lidar and satellite data confirm our earlier finding that the southern hemispheric PMCs are about 1 km higher than the corresponding clouds in the northern hemisphere.
