AB: Recent analysis of MSX-UVISI spectrographic data indicates that a "hump" exists in the middle ultraviolet spectral albedo of polar mesospheric clouds and that such a feature cannot be explained in the context of a mono-modal lognormal distribution of Mie scatterers. However, neither Mie scattering nor a mono-modal distribution need be abandoned if the index of refraction of the particles differs somewhat from the currently-accepted index of refraction of ice in the wavelength region of interest. Indeed, the index of refraction of ice in the middle ultraviolet is poorly known and essentially un-measured, so inferences from PMC measurements can possibly correct the index in this wavelength regime. The index of refraction of ice has important ramifications outside the field of PMC scattering because it has implications for the structure of ice at cold temperatures (~100K) and can be used in the exploration of icy moons.
