We will present an analysis of two geomagnetic storms that occurred during the month of May in 2002. Specifically we will
concentrate on the storms that started on May 11 and May 23. These storms were selected precisely because they are not
"great storms" but are presumably more typical of "run of the mill" storms so that the dynamics should be easier to
understand. Using (1) images of O/N2 derived from GUVI disk images of OI 135.6 nm and N2 LBH dayglow, (2) limb
profiles of O and N2 derived from GUVI limb images of the same dayglow features, (3) ground based ionospheric soundings,
and (4) TEC derived from dual frequency radar measurements on the Topex and Jason satellites, we will describe the evolution
of the vertical structure of the thermosphere during the storm. We will use both the TING model of thermospheric dynamics
and the open source version of the SAMI-2 ionospheric code (http://wwwppd.nrl.navy.mil/sami2-OSP/source-code-description/) to
relate the observed thermospheric and ionospheric vertical structure before during and after the two storms. We will
discuss the implications for storm-time thermospheric dynamics and thermospheric modeling.
