AB: Gravity waves exhibit instabilities that depend on wave amplitude, intrinsic frequency, Reynolds number, wave superposition, and the spectrum of perturbations to the initial flow. Competing initial instabilities complicate the range of initial responses, while nonlinear effects quickly drive the flows towards more complex structures. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are employed to examine gravity wave instabilities spanning a range of initial flow parameters and illustrate the complexity of dynamics anticipated from simpler stability analyses. DNS also allows us to examine the consequences of instability for wave amplitudes, fluxes of heat and momentum, and the turbulence and mixing that accompanies gravity wave instability.
