AB: The coordinated sounding rocket and ground-based observations were conducted in Norway in December 2004. The main objective of this campaign, called DELTA (Dynamics and Energetics of the Lower Thermosphere in Aurora), is to elucidate the atmospheric dynamics and energetics in the polar lower thermosphere associated with the auroral energy input. In this campaign, a sounding rocket, the EISCAT radar, Fabry-Perot Interferometers (FPI), and other ground-based radar and optical instruments were operated to perform simultaneous and comprehensive observations of this region. The sounding rocket was launched from Andoya Rocket Range, Norway, at 0:33 UT on 13 December 2004, during the geomagnetically active period. The instruments onboard the rocket successfully performed their measurements and provided the rotational temperature and number density of molecular nitrogen, auroral green line emission rate, and the ambient plasma parameters up to 140 km altitude. Neutral temperature, neutral wind, the auroral images and the ionospheric parameters were observed by ground-based measurements. The results show that neutral temperatures from the ground-based FPI observation are consistent with rotational temperatures from the rocket observation at the optimum altitude of auroral arcs, which is determined from a combined all-sky camera images from two stations. In this paper, we also present preliminary results of the neutral wind observations.
