In this paper we present resonance lidar measurements of
mesopause-region temperatures from two sites with similar tropical
latitudes (18.35°~N and 20.7°~N) but separated in
longitude by nearly 90° (66.75°~W and 156.3°~W), at
the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico and the Maui Space Surveillance
Complex atop Mount Haleakala, Hawaii. The results to be presented come
from seasonal composite mean nights. These measurements were made from
2002-2004 at Haleakala and 2003-2005 at Arecibo. In spite of the similar
latitudes of the two sites, a number of distinct differences in the
mesopause structure are noted. Some examples are: Temperatures are
modulated more strongly by tides over Haleakala than Arecibo; The summer
mesopause at Haleakala is low (88 km), whereas at Arecibo it is high (99
km); And there is a large temperature inversion layer near 93 km that
results in a dual mesopause at Haleakala that is much less prominent at
Arecibo.
