TI: Mesosphere/Lower Thermosphere Signatures of a Sudden Stratospheric Warming in the Extended Candian Middle Atmosphere Model

AB: A sudden stratospheric warming occurs spontaneously in a model run of the extended Canadian Middle Atmosphere model in late January. The effects of the warming extend through the mesosphere and into the lower thermosphere. The mesospheric signature is a cooling but the thermospheric signature is a warming. Prior to the warming both wave 1 and wave 2 signatures are enhanced. The zonal component of the non-orographic gravity wave drag is significant prior to the warming but disappears during the warming. In this paper, the evolution of the background fields, the planetary wave signatures, and the gravity wave drag is presented and possible reasons for the observed behaviour discussed.
