We investigate the efficiency of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in accelerating solar energetic particles (SEPs) by comparing
their respective kinetic energy budgets. Our SEP sample comprises a list of 20-30 well-observed events whose energy spectra
are obtained by combining data from multiple in-situ instruments. The corresponding CMEs were observed with the LASCO
coronagraphs. Calibrated images were used for the mass and velocity measurements. Because most of these events correspond to
fast and extended CMEs, extra care was taken during the measurements to isolate the ejecta from other signatures usually
associated with these type of events. The CME masses were corrected to the first order, for projection effects assuming
radial propagation from the corresponding source regions. The implications for the acceleration efficiency of CMEs derived
from the comparison between CME and SEP energies are discussed.
