TI: Thermal Properties of Heavy Ions throughout the Heliosphere: 39 Solar Wind Species from Ulysses-SWICS

AB: The kinetic properties of heavy ions in the solar wind reflect the kinetic processes governing the solar wind in the heliosphere. We use Ulysses-SWICS data which resolves heavy ions in a wide range of mass per charge, 2≤ m/q≤9.33. In particular, we look for deviations from the canonical behavior of equal bulk speed and equal thermal speed for all heavies. Such deviations are expected to carry signatures of all important kinetic processes in the solar wind, such as wave-particle interactions, and collisional processes. We also discuss a simple model to assess the relative importance of these effects. The Ulysses-SWICS data set is ideally suited for this task due to its extended m/q range, and also its global coverage of the heliosphere up to 5 AU.
