Particle spectra at a CME-driven shocks can be approximated by either a power law with exponential roll over
or by a broken power law. In both cases, an important parameter, the breaking energy E0, can be extracted
from observations. Since the shape of particle spectra is a result of the balance between two
competing processes: particle acceleration at the shock and particle loss from the shock,
the parameter E0 contains rich information about both processes.
In this work, we study the dependence of E0 on (Q/A), i. e. E0 for various heavy ions.
It has been shown that the value of E0 for heavy ions often exhibit a (Q/A)α dependence with
alpha ranging from 1 to 2, varying from event to event. We discuss how α can depend on both the
acceleration process and the loss process and what can we learn from the (Q/A)α dependence of E0.
