An X 7.1 solar flare occurred at 0636 UT on 20 January 2005. A CME from this flare arrived at the Earth 34 hours later. An
SSC began at ~1650 UT on 21 January 2005 followed by a geomagnetic storm with a Dst perturbation of ~-100nT. This
paper will provide an overview of this geomagnetic storm, so as to enable subsequent authors in the special session to focus
on the salient physics of their observations, without having to repeatedly describe the global situation using the same
generic set of magnetic index and particle flux data. The paper will present the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field
data near Earth preceeding and during the storm. It will also review the time histories of AE and Sym-H, geosynchronous
magnetometer and particle data, and summaries of other major data sets. A summary of key event times will also be covered.
