We discuss the January 20, 2005, space weather event using data from
particle instruments on SOHO, ACE, Chandra,
a dosimeter on the ISS,
as well as Earth-based neutron monitors.
We compare the timing of different particle species at different locations
and consider their implications on the structure
of the strongly disturbed inner heliosphere
as well as on the origins of the different particle populations.
The unique combination of instruments in space, Earth- and near-Earth orbit,
as well as on ground gives us a unique opportunity to investigate
causes and effects of the largest space weather event in the current solar activity cycle.
