AB: A statistical analysis is performed on satellite and ground-based observations from years 2000 to 2005 to study the spatial and temporal variability in the F2 layer of the ionosphere. These time series are correlated to solar wind proton flux density as measured by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) satellite. Analysis of the low-frequency variability for the foF2 time series reveals a correlation (r > 0.7) with the proton flux data. The lag in the maximum correlation, as obtained from the cross-correlation function at various stations, suggests that the signal propagates through the magnetosphere then the ionosphere. The maximum correlation varies with station position, higher latitudes having a higher correlation. The lag between the solar wind and ionosphere time series suggests possible predictive capabilities. The high-frequency variability of the foF2 data also varies with position.
