TI: Spectral Constraints on the Heating of CME Plasmas

The leading edge of a fast CME is heated by a shock wave.
The bulk CME plasma is not shocked, but it is heated by
some as yet poorly constrained mechanism. We discuss
recent results for the amounts of heating and the partition
of the energy among different particle species both for
shocks and for the plasma in the CME interior. We
will also discuss the powerful diagnostics available
for future spectroscopic missions.
