AB: Magnetic reconnection is commonly invoked as a plasma energization and particle acceleration process in astrophysics, but the levels of detail regarding the underlying physics that are required are generally far demanding than what is typically encountered in laboratory or space plasma physics. Naively, one would therefore expect it to be far easier to answer questions regarding reconnection in the astrophysical context as opposed to the laboratory or space plasma physics contexts. My talk will focus on why this naive expectation is not correct, and will discuss the specifics of such astrophysics-motivated questions, as well as some possible answers.
