Plasma waves and fluctuations in the vicinity of collisionless shocks are crucial to most of the mechanisms proposed to
explain cosmic ray acceleration. Wave observations in the foreshock are key in for the Fermi type of acceleration. Lower
hybrid waves can be generated by instabilities associated with reflected ions at Quasi-perpendicular shock. These waves can
be in resonance interaction both with ions and electrons simultaneously, therefore they are very effective in the transfer of
energy from the ion bulk motion to the acceleration of electrons.
The only shock that allows comprehensive in-situ measurements is the terrestrial bow shock. Multi-point measurements in the
vicinity of the terrestrial bow shock enable the identification of the composition of the observed turbulence. The results of
such an identification are used to validate models proposed for particle acceleration at SNR related shocks.
