Physical models cannot reproduce exactly the reality. Diffusion codes like Salammbo 3D simulator of the Earth radiation belts
have still some inaccurate input parameters and a viable prediction of the belts with only a physical model is utopian
nowadays. Data assimilation techniques have been developed for more than fifty years in Meteorology and are now being
transposed in other fields like Oceanography. These techniques, by regularly correcting the prediction of dynamical models
with observations, allow forecasting and even improvements of the simulator used. Thus, the introduction of data assimilation
techniques in the radiation belts modelling could considerably improve the accuracy of the restitution and prediction of the
reality. For two years now, efforts have been made at ONERA to implement direct data assimilation in the Salammbo code,
using cross-calibrated satellite measurements. This first step has already put forward great improvements in the dynamical
restitution of the radiation belts. Here, we present this technique and introduce further steps of filtered data assimilation
methods implemented in the Salammbo code.
