The varying output formats of space weather model data makes it increasingly
difficult to both analyze and share. These unique output formats are often
times platform dependant and also require intricate knowledge of the physical
layout and properties of each output file in order to access the data. Custom
read routines are required for each model and output format, which greatly
reduces the portability of not only the data itself, but also any analysis
tools that are developed to specifically handle a particular format. The CCMC
is currently implementing a comprehensive data format standardization
methodology that allows heterogeneous model output data to be stored uniformly
in any common science data format. These standardized files contain both the
original model output data as well as additional metadata elements to create
platform independent and self-descriptive data files. To facilitate model data
dissemination, data reuse, and code reuse - the CCMC is providing standardized
model data along with a library of access and interpolation routines that allow
direct access to both model data as well as the embedded metadata. This library
provides access to data at any given position and time without needing to be
familiar with the internal layout of the files. We will discuss what routines
are available, how to use them, and our experiences to date.
