With coordinate data analysis of in-situ satellite FAST measurements of particle and field, measurements from DMSP IDM and
RPA, along with auroral UV image from POLAR and ground-based radar, an investigation is made on the features of ion
up-flowing (including both of bulk and conic/beam flow) during some major magnetic storms with minimum Dst less than -200nT
between 1998 to 2003. The morphologic characteristics of strong ion upflow versus MLT and MLAT are presented. Close
relationship of large O+ upflow with large shear of plasma convection are exampled for typical cases. Attention is also paid
to the relationships between large O+ up-flowing fluxes with strong soft electron precipitation, field-aligned electrical
field and currents, respectively.
It is confirmed that dayside cusp/cleft is a very important region of storm-time ionospheric O+ up-flowing, but not the
unique dominant one. In most cases large out-flowing of energetic oxygen O+ from dawn sector ionosphere is preponderant
during the main phase of magnetic storm, but not true for all storms. A large part of O+ upflow bursts occur near the
poleward edge of strong aurora activity region, mapping into magnetospheric boundary layers such as LLBL, BPS, cusp/cleft. At
the topside ionosphere, large bulk ion upflowing are associated closely with strong convection shear or abnormal large
convection self. Besides, large upper ionospheric bulk upflowing are often observed at very low latitude edge of twisted dusk
convection cell during storm main phase; its relation with O+ in the storm-time ring current is worthy of further study.
