AB: Intense geomagnetic storms are usually caused by the CME-magnetosphere interaction. Up to now there are only very few in situ measurements with respect to the details of interactions of CME with the front shock and magnetosphere. In this paper we report such a fortuitous observation made by Cluster four spacecraft. At 16:35 UT on Nov. 4, 2001 LASCO/SOHO observed an Earth-direction halo CME. Associated with the CME were a front shock and a magnetic cloud, which caused an intense magnetic storm with Dst<-300 nT on Nov. 6-8, 2001. At 01:54 UT on Nov. 6, 2001, Cluster spacecraft were located in the near-tail dawn magnetopause (-9.6, 15.0, 2.2)Re in GSM coordinates. The constellation encountered with the shock front and observed part process of the interaction between the front shock and the flank magnetosphere. The primary analysis of the measurement shows that a magnetic double-layer, alike an Alfven soliton with magnetic field lines twisting, was generated during the front shock-magnetopause interaction. The magnetic double-layer propagated along the ambient magnetic field in the GSM -x direction. Part of low energy particles was trapped and accelerated by the parallel electric field associated with magnetic double layer. A fast beam in the GSM -x direction was observed by Cluster in the phase space and its velocity was larger than the local Alfven speed. It is also found that part particles with similar kinetic energy oscillated in x-z plane in phase space. The particle oscillation was probably caused by the surface waves which excited during the impacting of the CME-associated shock on the magnetopause. The magnetic double layer and the surface waves may pay an important role in the energy transfer and particles inter-exchange between the magnetosheath and magnetosphere during the CME impulsion.
