TI: The Effect of IMF Clock Angle and Geomagnetic Dipole Tilt Angle on Solar Wind Entry Under Northward IMF

Double high-latitude reconnection plays an important role in the formation of both cold dense plasma sheet (CDPS) and low
latitude boundary layer (LLBL) when interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is due northward. It is not clear, however, how the
reconnection process, and thus the plasma entry, change if the IMF clock angle or the geomagnetic dipole tile angle is
different from zero. Recent Cluster observations have shown that double high-latitude reconnection can occur for IMF clock
angle of up to 60°, and that the dipole tilt determines in which hemisphere high-latitude reconnection of a given
magnetosheath field line occurs first. We use the OpenGGCM global magnetosphere model to study in detail the effect of the
IMF clock angle and the geomagnetic dipole tilt angle on plasma entry under northward IMF condition. Specifically, we examine
the reconnection topology, efficiency, and the rate at which plasma enters the magnetosphere.
