The magnetospheric multiscale (MMS) mission will resolve all important scales relevant to the reconnection processes at the
Earth's magnetopause and in the magnetotail. In doing so, it will determine the kinetic processes responsible for
collisionless magnetic reconnection, how this reconnection is initiated and sustained, where it occurs, and what role
external forces and other processes such as turbulence play in reconnection. Measurements within the reconnection diffusion
region (where the ions and electrons are demagnetized) are key to answering these difficult questions. The MMS mission is
designed to maximize the probability of encountering the diffusion regions at the magnetopause and in the magnetotail.
Furthermore, the spacecraft separation strategy is designed to resolve the important scales within these diffusion regions.
The overall mission design maximizes the science return within the spacecraft mass (fuel) budget. Mission phases and
spacecraft separation strategies are described along with modeling used to predict encounter probabilities with the diffusion
regions.
