AB: The MMS mission requires highly accurate and undisturbed plasma measurements together with precise double-probe electric-field measurements. In both cases, a stable and very low spacecraft potential is necessary. The instrument ASPOC (Active Spacecraft Potential Control) will control this potential as needed to achieve the optimum environment for the plasma and electric field instruments. ASPOC uses liquid metal ion sources to generate Indium ion beams. The instrument for MMS will be based on heritage from the Cluster mission, with several changes and improvements to adapt it for MMS. This talk will describe the instrument, the changes for MMS and the resulting capabilities, and how it will support the measurements by the MMS/SMART instrument suite in particular.
