We re-evaluate the likelihood of solar wind triggers being associated with substorm onsets by chance. We argue theoretically
that the likelihood is not as small as previous authors have argued, and support this by analysing the recurrence times
between objectively-defined solar wind triggers. Using a mathematical model of substorm occurrence, we demonstrate that the
effect of including or excluding substorm triggering has a negligible effect on substorm occurrence time. Hence substorm
triggering is not a necessary requirement to explain substorm occurrence.
