AB: Results from a comprehensive and systematic study of the energetic electron population obtained by Cluster observations in the near-Earth magnetotail plasma sheet will be presented. Data from the Cluster CIS and FGM instruments are used to determine plasma sheet intervals and the electrons are measured with the RAPID instrument. The energetic electron spatial distribution and dependence on magnetospheric activity and external drivers, their occurrence rates and their spectral and pitch angle properties will be investigated. Based on these results one can investigate details of the source and transport mechanisms for the energetic electrons. Is there a systematic cross tail spectral dependency indicating acceleration in a cross tail potential? Is the statistical phase space density distribution consistent with radial adiabatic transport? Knowing the answers to these questions may help us understand to what degree or if at all the magnetotail electrons can act as a source for the inner radiation belt.
