AB: The magnetic storm of Nov 8, 2004 generated a Dst peak response of about -350 nT, and had several follow-up sub-storms with Dst peaking at about -200 nT. Data from some twenty other strong magnetic storms was added to the investigation to extract a correlation between IMF and Dst values. A high correlation coefficient (r ~ 0.9) between the Dst peak value and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) 4 min sigma B distribution tail feature (the number of peaks in the pre-storm 6-hr period) was obtained. The dB-rms data was also considered. For the Nov 8, 2004 storm, the total electron content (TEC) of the ionosphere surged to about 5 times the nominal value. The TEC surge was also consistent with the other observed Dst peak values in the Nov 8, 2004 follow-up sub-storms and other smaller storms such as the May 15 (Dst -250 nT) and Aug 24 (Dst -200 nT) events in 2005. The ionospheric disturbances caused by X-rays (from solar flares) and the solar energetic particles (SEP) were used as reference to extract the response of the ionosphere to the events disturbing the IMF. Cross correlation of the IMF and Dst time series data revealed the usual propagation delay while close proximity was observed for TEC peaking and sharp decreases in Dst values.
