The current generation of energetic electron instruments, part of the CXD
(combined x-ray dosimeter) package on the GPS satellites, has now been
deployed on 5 GPS satellites. Their 12-hour, inclined orbits sample the outer
radiation belt from L=4 outward 4 times each orbit, yielding temporal
resolution from 75 minutes at L=4 down to 35 minutes at higher L=shells.
Preliminary work with fewer GPS satellites for the January 1997 magnetic
storms showed fast enhancement timescales of the order of 6 hours or less at
L=4 [Reeves et al, 1998].
We will use here the higher temporal coverage of the current GPS
constellation to investigate the enhancement timescales at a number of
L-ranges between L=4 and L=7. The measurements place direct bounds on the
location and type of proposed enhancement mechanisms (in situ heating by
waves, radial diffusion).
We will investigate here a series of storms observed during the second half of
2004 and first half of 2005.
