TI: Analysis of pressure structure in the magnetotail: Geotail observations

AB: We have studied structure of pressure in the magnetotail using the data from the Geotail spacecraft. The statistical analysis have clarified three outstanding points. First, the total pressure (magnetic pressure + plasma pressure) in the lobe (beta<0.1) tends to be higher than that in the plasma sheet (beta>0.1) in all regions. Second, the structure of total pressure in the midtail region shows seasonal dependence. In summer, total pressure in the southern part is higher than that of the northern part or the neutral sheet. In winter, in contrast, total pressure in the northern part is higher. Third, response of solar wind dynamic pressure has dawn-dusk and north-south asymmetries for total pressure in the magnetotail. Here, solar wind dynamic pressure is calculated by using ACE and WIND data obtained from CDAWeb data services.
