TI: A sharp global seismic lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary

AB: The seismic technique of using S to P conversions for the location of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) has a long tradition. The full potential of this technique, however, became only obvious in very recent times when many broadband data became available and receiver function processing steps were applied. A clear LAB signal was detected at practically each site were we looked for it. Examples of LAB observations from many geologically different regions on Earth will be shown and discussed. Our conclusions is that the LAB is a second global sharp discontinuity, besides the crust-mantle boundary, which is of great importance for studying the dynamics of lithospheric plates.
