Successful interpretation of the longitudinal profiles of rivers in southern Africa requires identification of the relative
roles of bedrock geology, tectonics, river capture history, climatic change and eustasy.
Knick points, expressed as waterfalls or as changes in gradient, are examined for the Kunene, Orange, Zambezi and Shire
Rivers utilising Shuttle Imaging Radar topographic data, Gtopo 30 topographic data, Hydro 1K drainage data, satellite
imagery, zoogeography and fieldwork.
The results provide insights into what can, and cannot, be inferred about the uplift history of Africa.
