The Central Menderes Metamorphic Core Complex is located within the Western Anatolia Extended Terrane. It is bounded by two
low-angle Detachment surfaces; the north-dipping Alasehir (Kuzey) Detachment to the north and the south-dipping Buyuk
Menderes Detachment to the south.
The north-dipping Alasehir Detachment surface contains top-to-N-NE shear sense indicators overprinted by top-to-north
brittle shear sense indicators. It also contains a well developed Turtleback fault surface similar in its geometry to the
Death Valley Turtleback surfaces in southwestern Basins and Ranges. The south-dipping Buyuk Menderes Detachment surface
contains top-to-north ductile shear-sense indicators. These structural features were overprinted by top-to-south ductile
shear sense indicators, which were in turn overprinted by britlely deformed top-to-south kinematic indicators.
Based on our field observations, interpretation of available seismic reflection profiles and radiometric age
determinations, including our limited number of monazite ages, we suggest that the northward movement along the Alasehir and
Buyuk Menderes Detachment surfaces were initiated in Late Oligocene along a large continental-scale N-dipping main breakaway
fault. We propose that the main breakaway fault is located on the south side of Gokova Gulf and extension may have started
with a simple shear zone at depth. The high grade metamorphic rocks of the Central Menderes Metamorphic Core Complex were
brought close to the surface due to extensional unroofing of the upper plate rocks of this main breakaway. The Alasehir
Detachment was formed in Early Miocene as the secondary breakaway. The southward movement along the Buyuk Menderes Detachment
was also initiated in Early Miocene.
