TI: Surface deformation of the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake using the high density cadastral controlling points

The cadastral controlling points were used to identify the coordinate of buildings or acres. The coordinate of each point is
measured by total station and connected to GPS controlling points. This density of these controlling points is more than 40
points/km2 and the accuracy of each point is less than 3 cm. The high quality and quantity controlling pointÝs data could
afford detail deformation information during big earthquake.
In Taichung area, which located on northern part of the Chelungpu fault, government measured the cadastral controlling points
before and after the Chi-Chi earthquake and there were 1334 controlling points were measured in 35 km2 and most of these
controlling points are located on hanging wall of the Chelungpu fault.
In the footwall, the displacement is about 1.1~1.2 m in 123 to 128 degree which is consistent with the GPS data. In the
hanging wall, the displacement direction is concentrate on 326 to 330 degree instead of the southwestern part which is at 310
degree. In eastern part, the displacement amount is from 7.5~ 8 m which consistent with the GPS and strong motion data, but
in western part the displacement amount changes from 8 m to 4~6 m and then increases to 8 m again along the 326 degree
trending. The changing of these displacements was controlled by geometry of fault plane.
