AB: The Puli region in central Taiwan is characterized by subdued, lateritic hills surrounded by high and steep mountains typical of the active Taiwan orogen. This study reviewed sedimentation data from 3 intramountain basins in the Puli region, using radiocarbon dating and palynostratigraphy to constrain the chronology, and derived the region­Ýs denudation rates of 0.1-0.4 mm/yr in the past 200s ky. These rates are one order lower than those normally obtained in the Taiwan orogen, indicating that the Puli region has been uplifted slower than its surrounding mountains since > 200s ka. Linking this low rate of erosion and rock uplift to the genesis of the subdued, lateritic hills underscores the utility of these distinct landforms in interpreting kinematics elsewhere in the orogen.
