We have performed the nonlinear waveform inversion for the velocity structures beneath the Taipei basin in the northern
Taiwan. The wave propagation modeling is carried out using a 3D precisely spectral element simulation, and a neighbourhood
algorithm implements the inversion by minimizing the misfit between synthetic and observed seismograms. The consistence
between the observed and synthetic waveforms shows that the reliability of the obtained velocity structure. The result makes
us not only get better understanding the complex basin structure beneath the Taipei basin area, but can identify waveform
characteristics due to velocity heterogeneity and topographic effect. In addition, the results also shown how the computation
time and memory requirements scale with the dimension of the parameter space and size of the ensemble for the spectral
element method.
