The TCDP-A well will face the fine grain muddy sandstone or mudstone dominated formations of the Pliocene and Pleistocene in
the Taichung area.The purpose of this study is how to make good core preservation and establish the nannofossil
biostratigraphy within the integrated Taiwan Chelungpu Fault Drilling Project (TCDP), Over 400 meters subsurface cores have
been resinned and slabbed, and all the core fabrics are also digitized. More than 150 rock samples have been analysized for
nannofossils and constrained a detail biostrtigraphic column on TCDP-A well. The fossil zone of the depth interval 431-869 is
NN16-18 which is equivalent to the Cholan formation, a lithologic stratigraphy in the northern and central Taiwan; Interval
883-1226 meter is NN15 which is equivalent to the Chinshui Shale. The Chelungpu fault is composed of five major shear zones
which are all happened on the depth interval of the marine Chinshui Shale. Interval 1293.37 -1710 meter is NN12-14,
equivalent to the Kueichulin Formation. Interval beneath 1714 meter of the TCDP-A well is NN16-18 (Cholan Formation) and
Nannofossil zone near the well bottom is NN16-18, expressed the repeated Cholan Formation. The lowest fossil zone is also
abundant of secondary reworked fossils in its assemblages. This study also reveals the fact that the repetition of younger
fossil zone NN16-18 at the bottom of the well verifies the subsurface position of Sanyi fault and this well has possibly
penetrated through the Sanyi Fault. Additionally, in the previous study, related samples from BH1-BBH1A & CLF-2 boreholes
fall in the range of NN14-NN15(Matini fossil zone, Martini 1971), which is upper Early Pliocene in age and equivalent to the
Yutenping sandstone Member and the Chinshui shale along the Holung-Chi sections of Miaoli area, northern Taiwan. The boundary
between the Chinshui Shale and the Kueichulin Formation in BH-1 borehole is located at 210.5-225.6m based on the
distribution richness of nannofossil Peak variation on nannofossil content in the BH-1A borehole probably originated from the
change of parasequence between different delta systems within the Yutenping Sandstone. The boundary between the Chinshui and
the Kueichulin Formation is also necessarily judged by lithofacies and sedimentary facies (Huang et al., 2002). Nannofossil
columns from these nearby two well would also provide good correlation to those of the TCDP-A well.
