Seismic travel-times and synthetic seismograms were used to determine the structure and P and S wave velocities in the crust
and uppermost mantle in Central Turkey. Data from five well-placed explosions and a half dozen quarry blasts were used to
obtain long refraction profiles. In addition, seismograms from several well-located earthquakes were utilized for shear wave
observations. Data were analyzed using 3-D travel-time analysis, ray-based synthetic seismograms, and matching elastic full
waveform earthquake seismograms.
Travel-time data used for generating the initial model and the synthetic seismograms were used to validate and refine the
models. The results of the reflection studies show that crustal thickness varies between 37 and 40 km. The Pn velocity is
about 7.9 km/s in Central Anatolia. Shear velocities complement the P wave velocities.
