AB: The multidisciplinary SO 186 SeaCause Cruises address the Great Sumatran Earthquakes of December 26th, 2004 and March 28th, 2005. An important goal of the experiment is the identification and investigation of segment boundaries of the upper plate. This has major influence on stress localization, strain accumulation, and rupture propagation. Methods employed to study the structural tectonics of the area will be a multi-channel reflection seismic survey in early 2006, wide-angle refraction seismic profiles to identify changes of the plate interface, a passive seismic experiment deploying OBH and OBS, sea floor observation using TV sled, heat flow measurements and sediment sampling. A set of three cruises using the German RV Sonne started in October 2005 with the deployment of a set of OBS and OBH. The stations were deployed crossing the segment boundaries of the Great Sumatran Earthquakes of December 26th, 2004 and March 28th, 2005. The post seismic activity will be recorded from October 2005 until recovery of the stations in February 2006. Here we will present first results of mainly bathymetric surveying as well as first data of magnetic and gravimetric measurements. The survey will cover parts of the outer-arc and fore-arc region offshore northern Sumatra in close cooperation with previous conducted surveys of the BGS (HMS Scott) and the JAMSTEC (RV Natsushima) cruises in early 2005.
