AB: The Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of 26 December 2004 [seismic moment magnitude (Mw) = 9.3] broke 1,200km from northern Sumatra to Andaman Island. This earthquake is the second largest earthquake event in more than 40 years, and it caused the most devastating tsunami in recorded history. An area of particularly large and rapid co-seismic slip and tsunami generation is estimated to be offshore of northern Sumatra, 200 km northwest of the beginning of the rupture at the epicenter. According to inversion of satellite data, the ocean bottom rose locally more than 5 m during the earthquake. Submarine geomorphic features and the pattern of co-seismic deformation are critical for modeling tsunami generation, yet they are poorly known. Two months after the event, we investigated the area of the forearc southwest of Aceh Basin, northern Sumatra, where the Sunda Trench bends to the west and where slip and co-seismic uplift are inferred to be paticularly high. Here, for the first time, we show ROV high-resolution video camera image for deep-sea floor to be severely shattered by the M9 class earthquake, and estimate the peak ground motion on the sea floor based on the video image to be over gravity acceleration.
