AB: The testing of rare gases to determine if they can be bound structurally in Earth materials is important given that they are widely used as chemically inert tracers for constraining the formation and evolution of the Earth. In the case of xenon, the search for a hidden reservoir in the Earth has been a long standing issue since it was noticed that the atmospheres of the Earth and Mars are depleted in xenon by a factor of 20 relative to other rare gases (i.e., Ne, Ar and Kr). More than 99 % of xenon was degassed from the mantle and the core seems an improbable xenon reservoir, suggesting that the 'missing Xe' must be trapped elsewhere. Using in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction, we show that at the conditions prevailing in the deep continental crust, xenon reacts with quartz, a major crustal component. These results provide an answer to the long standing "missing xenon" problem, and reveal rich new solid-state chemistries that are likely to be present among condensed rare-gas containing solids.
