AB: Bromine monoxide (BrO) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) abundances were measured by ground-based scattered light Multi AXis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) parallel to filter pack measurements in the volcanic plumes of Mt. Etna on Sicily in August-October 2004 and May 2005 and at Mt. Villarica in November 2004. The ratio between both trace gases were investigated recording the distance from the source as well as the spatial distribution in a plume cross section of Mt Etna. The second investigation was carried out by an IDOAS instrument. Additionally attempts were undertaken to differentiate the different summit crater of Mt Etna and to investigate other halogens ClO and OClO, which was measured for the first time in a volcanic plume, were investiagted. No BrO were detected near to the emission source - at the crater region. The increase of the BrO/SO2 was experimental studied up to a distance of 19 km from the summit of Etna. First model investigation were compared with the exerimental data and will be also presented. They reproduce the experimental data on the increase of the BrO/SO2 ratio relatively good.
