During November and December, 2004, we imaged much of the Bismarck volcanic arc with EM120 swath bathymetry and Hawaii MR1
side-scan aboard the R/V Kilo Moana. Local regions were imaged with the SIO Edgetech chirp system and the WHOI TowCam. In
addition, we collected 13 cores and one dredge haul. During this study we identified approximately 12 debris avalanche
deposits, including great detail of the 1888 Ritter collapse, discussed separately. Highlights of the other collapse fields
includes a large deposit associated with the breach of the caldera on Garove island, debris fields north of Dakataua volcano,
both north and south of Karkar volcano, south of Manam volcano, north and south of Crown island, north of Long Island, north
of both Tolokiwa and Sakar islands, and south of Bam volcano. Some or many of these debris fields could represent multiple
collapses, and many probably generated tsunamis. We expect that all island chains have suffered significant collapses of
many of their volcanoes during their histories.
