AB: Reventador Volcano, Ecuador, became significantly active in the spring of 2005. We deployed three PASSCAL style stations with broad band seismic sensors during a period of six weeks in August and September. Infrasonic microphones were also deployed at each station. One station located on the flanks of the cone recorded numerous seismic events with very long period signals (up to 20 s period) in addition to the typical range of volcano tectonic and harmonic tremor signals observed at many other erupting volcanoes. Explosion events were recorded on both the infrasonic and the seismic channels. Chugging signals similar to those observed at Karymsky Volcano, Kamchatka, and Sangay volcano, Ecuador, were also observed, suggesting that the vent was choked during some periods of the eruption cycle. Numerous seismic signals showed no evidence of accompanying infrasonic waves, even though these are probably not typical VT events. This may suggest that the vent is pressurizing prior to explosions and later releasing gasses to the atmosphere via rapid venting.
